Press Release

Raleigh, NC – Meredith College proudly presents Wither, a thought-provoking exhibition featuring the work of resident artists Elizabeth Kemple and Kayla Cooper. Through Printmaking and Ceramic sculpture, Wither explores themes of corruption, loss, and the inevitability of decline, both societal and existential. The exhibition will be on view in the lower level hallway of the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Building from April 30th to May 28th, with an opening reception on May 1st from 5-6 pm

Elizabeth Kemple’s work delves into the realm of mortality through printmaking, giving physical form to Death itself. Her work navigates themes of finality, the unknown, and the frightening yet comforting balance between life and death. Using layered textures and intricate compositions, she creates a visual dialogue with the personification of Death. Her work invites contemplation on our relationship with the end of life and the forces beyond our control.

Kayla Cooper’s ceramic sculptures serve as a visceral critique of the decay within government systems and the erosion of human and women’s rights. Using distressed and deteriorating forms, her work symbolizes the collapse of institutions once seen as unshakable. Decaying, and deconstructed forms become a metaphor for the fragility of democracy and the consequences of unchecked power. Her work urges viewers to question what is crumbling around them and what, if anything, can be salvaged.

Together, these artists create a striking conversation on impermanence; whether in governance or human existence itself. Wither challenges viewers to confront decay in its many forms and consider what remains after collapse.
