Press Release

The Frankie G. Weems Gallery at Meredith College features the artist Isabel Lu in the exhibition Noble Gentlemen. Through painting and herbalism, Noble Gentlemen honors paths of qi, blood, resilience, and anguish that echo across our bodies and across time.

Isabel’s work unpacks binary ideas of medicine, remedy, and care. Painting, writing, and practicing herbalism move together as a meditative process, echoing the interdependence between the physical and spiritual, rest and action, past and future. Inspired by Western and Chinese frameworks and routes of wellbeing, they combine portraiture with silly yet meaningful symbols from medicine and mythology. To see parts of ourselves within these medicines offers space to find remedy in our bodies and surroundings.

Noble Gentlemen will be on display from September 8th–28th, 2025, in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery at the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center on the Meredith College campus. The gallery is open weekdays from 9 am–5 pm and weekends from 2 pm–5 pm. The opening reception will be held on September 11th from 5–7 pm in the Weems Gallery. The gallery talk will take place in Room 137 at the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center from 5:30–6:30 pm. The gallery is located at 3800 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27607.
